What is a World Seed?

Understanding Seeds

A seed is a value (number or text) that determines how a game generates its world. The same seed will always create the same world, allowing players to share interesting worlds or recreate specific terrain features.

When you use a seed, the game's procedural generation algorithm uses that seed as a starting point to create terrain, biomes, structures, and resources in a consistent, repeatable way.

Why Use Seeds?

Share Worlds

Share interesting world seeds with friends so they can play in the same world

Speedrunning

Use known seeds for speedruns to ensure consistent world generation

Specific Features

Find seeds with rare biomes, villages at spawn, or other desired features

Server Consistency

Recreate the same world on different servers or after updates

Game-Specific Tips

⛏️ Minecraft Seeds

  • Seeds work for both Java and Bedrock (but generate differently)
  • Can be numeric or text (text is converted to numbers)
  • Blank seed generates a random world

🦀 Rust Seeds

  • Also need to set map size (1000-6000 recommended)
  • Different seeds have different monument layouts
  • Procedural maps update monthly on official servers

⚔️ Valheim Seeds

  • Alphanumeric seeds (case-sensitive)
  • Boss locations are seed-dependent
  • Trader and maypole locations vary by seed

🌳 Terraria Seeds

  • Special seeds unlock unique world modifiers
  • "Drunk world" and "For the worthy" are popular
  • Can combine seeds with world size selection

Frequently Asked Questions

Do seeds work on servers?

Yes! Seeds work on both singleplayer and multiplayer servers. The server will generate the world using the specified seed, and all players will experience the same world.

Can I change a seed on an existing world?

No. Seeds are set during world creation and cannot be changed afterward. You would need to create a new world with a different seed.

Are seeds case-sensitive?

It depends on the game. Numeric seeds are obviously not case-sensitive. For text seeds: Minecraft converts text to numbers (not case-sensitive), while Valheim seeds are case-sensitive.

What happens if I don't use a seed?

If you leave the seed field blank, the game will generate a random seed automatically. This is perfect if you want a completely unique, unpredictable world.

Do game updates affect seeds?

Major game updates can change world generation, which may cause the same seed to generate differently. However, already-generated chunks in existing worlds typically remain unchanged.
